The Illinois Department of Public Health Thursday reported the largest 24-hour period of deaths due to the COVID-19 virus.

IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike reported 125 additional deaths.

92 of the deaths were of Cook County residents. There were nine deaths in Lake County, seven deaths in Will County, four in St. Clair County, three in DuPage County, two each in Champaign and McHenry counties, and one each in Bond, Christian, Kane, Madison, McLean and Monroe counties.

There were 1,140 new cases of COVID-19 reported in Illinois for the 24-hour period.

Alexander County is now reporting a case. Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 25,733 cases, including 1,072 deaths, in 90 counties in Illinois.

The state website is currently reporting a fourth positive COVID-19 case in Effingham County. Karen Feldkamp at the Effingham County Health Department said that is a data entry error to the disease surveillance system at the state level. Feldkamp said that will be corrected on Friday's report.
