Effingham Fire Chief Bob Tutko has another example of the problems that distracted driving can cause.

Tutko said a driver reached over to the passenger seat for his cell phone that was ringing while the driver was exiting the interstate at the Fayette Avenue interchange. The driver ran off the paved surface of the roadway and struck a power pole, knocking the pole to the ground.

The chief said the driver was not injured, but said there was a lot of property damage. He said the lesson to be learned; leave your cell phone alone while driving; it only takes a second for something bad to happen when you take your eyes off the roadway.
