A number of groups representing businesses, student groups, and those who will benefit most directly from the event took part Saturday in the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Illinois, held at the beach at Lake Sara.

Plungers obtained a minimum of $100 in donations to participate in the event, which has been held for more than 15 years.

Almost every plunger dressed in costume for the event, including Special Olympics representative Vanessa Duncan, who wore a top hat and waistcoat. Duncan and her daughter were the final plungers of the day.
