A local man shared an apparent scam with us that he found online.

Bob Campbell of Teutopolis said he browses Facebook Marketplace on a regular basis. He spotted an ad for a fishing boat for a great price and checked on it. The alleged seller of the boat encouraged Campbell to go buy some E-Bay cards and cash them to pay for the boat and then to scratch off the cards. He was then to give the seller the numbers on the cards along with their name, address and phone number.

The seller also gave Campbell a phone number that was supposed to be a number for E-Bay. When Campbell phoned them, he said they claimed to be E-Bay, but then he used the number he has for E-Bay that he uses as a regular E-Bay customer and they told Campbell of the other number, "that's not us."

Campbell also told the alleged seller that he was going to be in the area where the seller allegedly lives and said he would just pick the boat up. He is yet to hear a response from the alleged seller after several days of waiting.

Campbell just doesn't want anyone who uses Facebook Marketplace to get burned by a scam artist.
