Three people and a dog were killed Tuesday afternoon in the crash of a small airplane in central Illinois.

The twin-engine plane went down in a field between Springfield and Rochester shortly after 3pm.

Officials have confirmed the victims were former Springfield mayor, fire chief and alderman Frank Edwards, his wife Cinda Edwards, who was Sangamon County coroner, and 69-year-old John Evans.

The control tower at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield had reported to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department prior to the crash that the pilot had reported problems with weather and instruments.
