A scam involving a supposed refund from Amazon is making the rounds.
Several area listeners let us know of the scam, which begins with a phone call identifying themselves as "Amazon Security". One of our listeners sent us a recording of the message they received.
The message indicates that a purchase has been made on your Amazon account that needs to be verified or disputed, and a phone number is left to call back.
Two listeners called the number and were told that someone attempted to purchase an iPhone in the amount of $529. When they disputed the charge, the scammer directed them to a website where they could request a refund, as seen below.
Feeling the website was legitimate, they were directed to an online form to fill out for a supposed refund. The form requests personal information, including bank account and routing numbers.
Both listeners stopped at this point, with one calling police to report the scam. If you receive this type of message, authorities suggest contacting your bank to check for fraudulent charges instead of calling the number back.
