Fire Destroys House in Shumway

Fire has destroyed a home in Shumway.

The call to the Kuhlman residence at 306 West Main came at 12:24am Friday. Shumway Fire Chief Joe Kemme said the front of the house was fully involved in flames when fire crews reached the scene. The fire had worked its way up to the second floor of the structure, then into the attic.

Kemme said no one was at home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Kemme said a fire investigator has been looking at the fire scene.

Shumway firefighters were assisted by crews from Effingham, Tri-County, Stewardson and Watson, as well as Abbott EMS and the Effingham County Sheriff's Department.

No firefighters were injured. Firefighters have been called back twice to the fire scene; just after 8am and about 10:20am.
