A man was killed Friday night after being hit by a vehicle after fleeing on foot from a crash in which he was involved moments earlier on I-57 in Franklin County.

Illinois State Police report a West City police officer attempted to make a traffic stop after seeing the car's driver commit a traffic violation.

In addition to the traffic violation, the registration displayed on the vehicle returned to a different make, type and color of vehicle. The 40-year-old man refused to stop and fled southbound on I-57 at what police termed a high rate of speed.

Another car, driven by a 50-year-old woman from Chicago, was traveling in the passing lane southbound when the man attempted to pass her on the inside shoulder. The man's car collided with the Chicago woman's car and came to rest in the center median. The man got out of the car and fled to the east on foot.

The man entered the northbound lanes of traffic and was hit by a car driven by a 46-year-old Altamont woman. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. It's not known if there were any other injuries during the incident.

State Police are continuing their investigation. The names of those involved are being withheld due to the ongoing investigation. Charges are not yet available.
