The vote was part of a series of motions approved to move ahead with Phase Two of the upgrade of the high school building. Tebbe Excavating was awarded the demolition work for a bid of $285,000.

The Board also awarded asbestos abatement work at all areas of the high school building being affected by the addition and remodel work. Midwest Service Group was awarded the work for a bid of $385,460, plus an alternate bid to remove the asbestos around the gymnasium windows for $7,405.

The abatement work is expected to start in January, followed by the balance of the project.

The most expensive portion of the work awarded Thursday was to Swingler Construction for $2,563,000. The work will include additions and remodeling at the shop wing to create a new Band area, a locker room and gymnasium wing, a connecting corridor linking the gym and cafeteria to the classroom portion on the west end, a new entrance and Study Hall portions of the high school.

Also awarded were bids to build a new addition including the locker room and storage room to Swingler Construction for $924,500; concrete pavement at the circle drive in lieu of asphalt to Swingler for $5,800; and removal and replacement of all gym windows to Swingler for $69,500.

The total cost of the project is $4,640,665, including architect's fees. Board President Brad Koester led the members in a discussion of how to finance the work. Nothing was set in stone last night, but the Board plans to use at least $2 million in reserves to knock down the amount of the bonds that will be sold to fund the balance.

The thought is that the funding for Phase II won't be needed until after the first of the year, so the financing will be discussed further at the November meeting.
