A Dieterich woman escaped serious injury in an incident in Teutopolis Monday afternoon.

Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports 57-year-old Mary Jo Jenkins of Dieterich was parked at a fuel pump at Casey's on Main Street in Teutopolis at 4:40pm. Deputies say Jenkins backed into a car parked at the pump behind her, owned by Garrett Booker of Willow Hill. Jenkins' car then traveled around the fuel island, drove over a curb and through a neighboring back yard at 308 West Main, and then struck a detached garage behind the residence at 308 West Main, causing structural damage.

Jenkins told deputies that her car's brakes failed, but deputies believe Jenkins was depressing the accelerator rather than the brake pedal.

Jenkins was injured, but declined treatment.

No citations were issued.
