(EFFINGHAM POLICE CHIEF JASON McFARLAND AT THE FIRST FRIDAY LUNCHEON)
Effingham Police Chief Jason McFarland and Acting Sergeant Aaron Lange discussed workplace safety and employee safety at the September First Friday Luncheon. The event is sponsored by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.
McFarland shared about past shooting incidents in Effingham, while Lange presented a video used by local schools that focuses on the mass shootings nationwide at schools and what can be learned from such incidents.
City police work with local businesses to help them develop protocol in case an incident occurs. Lange said they even work to "get their adrenaline up" to replicate the emotions that will be at play during an incident to help learn how to respond.

Some general tips offered by the chief and by Detective Lange: put a barricade in place to discourage the shooter; be quiet in hopes the shooter will think there is no one in a room; and perhaps most importantly HIDE. If a shooter can't find anyone, they'll look elsewhere.
Also, if you recover a weapon and the shooter has been neutralized, don't hold it on the shooter; put it in a trash can, turn the can over and sit on the can until authorities arrive. That will prevent further tragedy.
