Mattoon resident Alex Walker has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Congress from Illinois' 15th District. It's the seat now held by Republican John Shimkus, who is not seeking re-election.

Walker terms himself an avid conservative, a six-year US Air Force veteran, and a supporter of President Donald Trump. He also says he is openly gay.

Walker is a member of the Log Cabin Republicans of Illinois and is their Marketing Officer on their executive board. The Log Cabin Republicans have nationally endorsed Trump for another term in 2020.

Walker said he decided to run because he believes in "upholding true American values." He said he's running to protect 2nd Amendment rights, fight to produce a reliable health care system, and to protect US borders.
