Mattoon resident Richard Coffey has been sentenced to 36 years in prison.

The 34-year-old Coffey was found guilty at trial in June of two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, as well as counts of criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint.

Coffey was arrested by Mattoon police in January. Authorities alleged that Coffey picked up a woman in his car and then held her against her will while armed with a knife. He is alleged to have bound the woman with duct tape and beat her while inside the car. He then allegedly sexually assaulted her while holding her at knifepoint.

The woman, who is in her 20s, suffered cuts and bruises to her face. She was treated at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Coffey's sentence was 26 years in prison with an additional 10 years in prison due to some of his actions during the assault.
