A suspect in an armed robbery in Mt. Carmel was taken into custody Tuesday night following a three-county car chase.

The search for the suspect ended about 8pm near the Crawford-Lawrence county line.

The incident began around midday Tuesday when the holdup occurred at a Verizon store in Mt. Carmel. A pursuit followed that went from Wabash County through Lawrence County and ended in Crawford County. Police stopped a vehicle containing four people south and west of Flat Rock, west of Illinois Route 1, about 2pm. Three of the individuals were taken into custody but the fourth person, described as a black, heavyset male, fled on foot. A tip from a resident in the area led to the arrest of the fourth individual.

Authorities are trying to determine whether the man who had fled is also a suspect in a similar armed robbery of a cell phone store in Ohio.

The man was being held at last report at the Crawford County Jail in Robinson.
