UPDATE: I-70 Reopened Following Serious Crash

UPDATE: As of 6:45 pm, both east and westbound lanes of I-70 between Effingham and Altamont have reopened. A further release from State Police regarding the accident is forthcoming. 

 

UPDATE (5:10PM): The vehicles involved in the crash are being removed at this time. Illinois Department of Transportation and Howell construction are on scene repairing a concrete lane divider wall before the Interstate can be re-opened.

UPDATE (2:00pm): IDOT is moving construction barriers between the east and westbound lanes so that some of the traffic trapped in the backup can be turned around and directed to Altamont.

Emergency Responders are currently on scene of a multi-vehicle injury crash on I-70 milepost 90 between Altamont and Effingham which occurred shortly after 11:00 am.

Currently, both east and westbound lanes are shut down at this time.  Eastbound traffic is being re-routed at the Altamont exit and westbound traffic is being re-routed southbound on I-57.  The eastbound lanes are expected to be shut down for several hours.

State Police ask that you avoid the area and take alternate routes.
