Two semis and two cars were involved in a crash on I-70 in Fayette County that kept traffic tied up for several hours Thursday evening.
The crash happened in the westbound lanes between St. Elmo and Brownstown at 4:11pm.
State police report a semi driven by 35-year-old Abdifatah Yusuf of Amarillo, Texas ran into the rear of a rig driven by 52-year-old Johnpaul Lavenburg of Kansas City, Missouri. A car driven by 65-year-old Michael Rednour of Strongsville, Ohio then ran into the rear of Yusuf's semi, and a car driven by 45-year-old Robert Yagmin of Kansas City, Missouri then ran into the rear of Rednour's car.
As a result of the collision, Yusuf's semi left the roadway and entered the center median.
Yusuf and his passenger, 32-year-old Abukar Ibrahim of Amarillo, Texas, were taken to Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia for treatment of what were termed non-life threatening injuries, but Yusuf was later transferred to HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield for additional treatment.
No other injuries were reported. State police report a total of nine individuals in the four vehicles involved.
Yusuf was cited for improper lane usage, no insurance, and not wearing a seat belt.
Cleanup of the crash scene lasted well into Thursday night.
