Crash w/Injury, Arrests West of Altamont

A Sunday night crash resulted in one person taken to the hospital and two people taken to jail.

The crash happened at 9:18pm on I-70, two miles west of Altamont. State police report 29-year-old James Justus Smith of Columbus, Kansas was westbound when Smith made an abrupt braking move and lost control of the car. The vehicle went into a skid and crossed over the center divide into another lane, then onto the north shoulder and then down into a ditch on the north side of the roadway before coming to a stop.

One person, 35-year-old Nicole Howland of Columbus, Kansas, was injured and was taken for treatment.

Smith was arrested on counts of leaving the scene or failure to report an accident involving personal injury, DUI alcohol, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash, possession of open alcohol by a driver, and failure to wear a seat belt. Another passenger in the vehicle, 29-year-old Terrence Miller of Joplin, Missouri, was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
