Crash in Clay County Injures Passenger

25-year-old Monika Montes of Effingham was riding in a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Andres Andino of Effingham at 11pm when the crash happened. The scene was the Dieterich/Clay City blacktop, nine miles north of Sailor Springs near Athens Road.

State police report Andino's car was northbound on the blacktop when it swerved right onto the gravel shoulder. Police said Andino overcorrected and lost control of the car, which crossed both lanes before running off the left side of the blacktop. The car struck a grassy ditch, then rolled twice before coming to rest on its top.

Montes was injured and was airlifted from the scene to Carle Hospital in Urbana.

Andino was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol.
