An investigation followed that led to the arrest of Keith McGrew III of Chicago. McGrew was arrested at 7:30am after he was located on foot on the Lake Road, a few miles southwest of Mattoon. McGrew was taken into custody without incident.

McGrew indicated to authorities that he had come to Mattoon from Chicago last Saturday and that he was staying with a female at Sunrise Apartments. McGrew became an acquaintance of the shooting victim over the past few days. McGrew said he and the victim quarreled, so McGrew shot the victim.

McGrew is being held at Coles County Safety and Detention Center on a charge of first degree murder.
