The Effingham Public Library has announced that it is implementing a one-time waive of late fines for children who sign up for “It’s Showtime at Your Library!” Summer Reading Challenge 2019. Sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge began Wednesday, May 1 and the Challenge will run from May 15 to July 15.

Catherine Bailey, Programming Outreach Manager explained, “Each year we host a Summer Reading Challenge to keep children reading over the long summer break. Research has shown that children who don’t read over the summer end up 2 months behind when they return to school in the fall. However, children who read just six books over the summer score consistently higher in both reading and math. Clearly, it’s in all our interest to get children reading over the summer, and we want to make sure that a late fine isn’t stopping children from participating.”

To be eligible to have their fines waived, children must have an Effingham Public Library Card. Effingham Public Library can only waive fines from Effingham Public Library items. The fine waiver does not apply to lost or damaged books.

Registration is online at www.effinghamlibrary.org or visit the library.
