Altamont City Council members Monday approved a Tax Increment Financing district development agreement with Richard and Tammy Kelly.

The agreement requires the Kellys to remove three vacant buildings from their sites. One is the former locker plant on Main Street in downtown Altamont, another is the former Dutch Pantry restaurant building south of Interstate 70, and the third is a former video store and gas station south of the interstate.

As part of the agreement, the City will assume ownership of the downtown lot once the former locker plant building is razed. The City agreed to reimburse the Kellys a portion of the demolition costs, up to $40,000.

Also Monday, the Altamont council heard from members of the Altamont Garden Club, who explained their plans to put four benches by the walking path in Schmidt Park. The benches should be in place by this summer.

The Council decided to seek bids on replacement of the roof on the streets and alleys building; and approved the annual agreement with the Effingham County Health Department for larvaciding services.

The Council approved a home occupation license with Lindsay Durkin, who plans to open and operate a carpet and upholstery cleaning business at 14 Lincoln Drive.
