The Effingham County unemployment rate was 4.9%, up from 4.6% in January 2018. The Illinois Department of Employment Security said non-farm employment increased by 200 compared to last year. A greater number of people in the job market resulted in the increase in the unemployment rate. Employment gains were posted in Government, Educational and Health Services, and Manufacturing. Employment in Professional and Business Services and Wholesale Trade declined.
