Marion County sheriff”s deputies say a 31-year-old Ste. Marie man was arrested at the Salem Walmart store after police tracked him from an alleged aggravated domestic battery on I-57.

Marcus Brewer was taken to the county jail where he remained pending a decision on formal charges.

The sheriff’s department had initially received a report of a man beating a woman in a car pulled off the side of northbound I-57 eight miles north of the Salem exit. Deputies say they found the battered woman in the vehicle, but the man had left on foot. They followed his footprints through the snow to Alma where they lost them. Salem canine Freddie was called to help track the man who it was later determined had gone to Billy Jo’s General Store and called for a ride. The sheriff’s dispatch was able to confirm who provided the ride and that the suspect had been dropped off at the Salem Walmart. Salem Police and Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies then converged on Walmart and located Brewer in the rear portion of the store. Deputies report Brewer was arrested without incident and no weapons had to be drawn.

The woman found in the vehicle was taken to Salem Township Hospital where she was treated for injuries sustained from being punched with a fist and being bitten in the face. She was later released.
