Fire did damage to a home on Effingham's south side Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Joyce Deters residence at 309 Kagay Avenue about 3pm. Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said when firefighters arrived, there was smoke coming out of the back side of the house. Further inspection found fire coming out of the south end of the house by the garage, in the kitchen and dining room area of the home. Kulesza said firefighters entered the home from the rear and got water on it. A second crew worked on the outside of the home to vent it.

Kulesza said fire crews knocked down the fire in a short time, and began using fans to remove smoke from the structure.

Mrs. Deters said she arrived home to find two men outside her house who said they had seen the smoke and had notified firefighters.

Teutopolis firefighters were on scene to assist, and Watson, Shumway and Montrose firefighters staffed the Effingham stations in case of another fire call.

Kulesza said firefighters are still working to determine where the fire began and its cause.

No one was injured.
