The Effingham County Board at a special meeting at noon Friday contracted with Schindler Elevator Corporation of St. Louis, Missouri to assist with repairs to the elevator in the Effingham County Office Building.

The contract with Schindler is for $57,120. Schindler was one of five vendors talked with by Chief Deputy Sheriff Paul Kuhns, who has overseen the effort to get repairs started.

The contract is for Schindler to move ahead and get a replacement hydraulic lift, or "jack", built for the elevator, along with the installation of the lift. The project is expected to take a minimum of eight weeks to complete. Schindler will also apply for a permit for the jack.

Kuhns cautioned that additional work will be involved not covered under the contract, including removal of the old jack and anything else in the elevator shaft.

The County will pay Schindler 50% of the contract price once it's finalized, another 40% after 30 days, and the balance when the project is completed.

Kuhns said the damaged lift has lost some oil that will need to be cleaned up before the new unit is installed.

An unexpected possible source of funding help for the project appeared at the Board meeting in the person of Effingham Mayor Jeff Bloemker and City Economic Development Director Todd Hull. Bloemker said the City could make up to $100,000 in TIF dollars available to help cover the cost of the project. He said it's in everyone's interest to have the elevator in operation. Board members thanked the City for the offer. A formal proposal should be available on Monday.

Board members John Perry and Joe Thoele were not present for the meeting.
