Mattoon firefighters handled a building fire north of town during the noon hour Wednesday.

The fire was located at 7978 Old State Road and the call came at 12:18pm. Fire crews spotted heavy fire and smoke coming from the building as they reached the scene. While approaching the building, several explosions were heard and felt.

During the fire attack, half of the building collapsed. Mattoon Fire Chief Anthony Nichols said the building and its contents were a total loss. There are no injuries to report, although the family's pet dog did not get out of the building in time.

The cause of the fire is still being determined.

Mattoon firefighters were assisted by Lincoln Fire Protection District firefighters.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:15pm.
