The public elevator in the Effingham County Office Building conked out Tuesday morning, and will need significant repairs. The repairs could take up to one month to complete.

Beginning with the County Airport Commission meeting on Wednesday, all public meetings in the County Office Building will be held in one of the first floor meeting rooms.

The stairs will still be available to gain access to other floors for those who can physically manage them.

County Supervisor of Assessments Pam Braun said her office mailed close to 3,500 annual renewal exemption forms this week. That includes the 2019 Homestead/Senior Freeze Forms. The Senior Homestead is based on occupying your home as your principal residence as of January 1, 2019 and turning 65 or being 65 in the tax year. The Senior Freeze portion is applicable if your 2018 household income is less than $65,000. Braun said it's best to wait until you have filed your 2018 Income Tax return to verify you are eligible for this section and to file the renewal.

Due to the elevator being out of order for at least the remainder of January, and the Supervisor's Office being located on the fourth floor of the Office Building, Braun suggests it might be in your best interest to mail in your forms, or wait until the elevator is back in operation.

If you have any questions on the exemption forms or the payment process, contact Braun's office at 342-6711.
