Effingham County Clerk Kerry Hirtzel Monday said the vote count in the county coroner's race could conclude on Tuesday.

On Election Day earlier this month, Republican nominee Kim Rhodes received 7,120 votes to 7,028 votes for independent candidate Gerry Kingery, but 108 vote-by-mail ballots were not counted that day.

Hirtzel explained that Illinois law states that November 20 is the last date to receive vote-by-mail ballots. The final canvass of all votes must be done by November 27.

Another consideration is that the vote-by-mail ballots had to be postmarked by Election Day, November 6. Hirtzel said that of the 108 vote-by-mail ballots, only 39 are properly postmarked.

Hirtzel said that a pre-test of the tabulation equipment has already been successfully completed.

If there a request for a recount once all of the tabulating is completed, the protesting candidate is required to pay for the recount.
