Veterans Day will officially be observed on Sunday, but local schools did their part to say 'Thank You' to veterans for their service on Friday.

Several departments work together each year at Effingham High School to honor veterans in an assembly featuring music, dramatic presentations and video.

Following the program, veterans in attendance were invited to the library for refreshments and time to mingle with family and friends.

We asked EHS student Jessica Nantes about the event. She was thankful for the chance to say thank you to veterans and for the opportunity for various groups of students to work together on the project. Asked whether she feels young people have an understanding of the conflicts going on in her world, Nantes said she feels they have a general understanding and wondered whether those young people might begin working together to discuss the conflicts and how they might best be addressed.

Many veterans and their spouses gathered, including Roger Henderson of Teutopolis, who served in the Air Force at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Henderson spoke about the Crisis and how it affected him personally...

Other observances took place at St. Anthony Grade School, Sacred Heart School, Central Grade School and Dieterich schools.
