Effingham Noon Rotarians were updated on recycling and how Effingham County could do better at it during their meeting October 31.

Sarah Ruholl-Sehy was the guest speaker. She heads Effingham Recycles, a volunteer group trying to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling.

In a survey conducted by the group, Effingham Recycles found that 83% of respondents said they would use curbside recycling, and another 11% said they might use it.

Almost 25% of respondents said they don't recycle because they didn't know recycling options were available locally. A paper recycling facility is available in Teutopolis and bins at Centenary United Methodist Church at 3rd and Grove in Effingham accepts a variety of recyclables.

Some tips offered: flatten boxes...crush bottles and put the cap back to keep it crushed...don't put food in recycle bins...don't put the items in a plastic bag, since they then have to be taken out of the bags at the recycling site...don't use plastic straws.

Ruholl-Sehy reminded that the RIGHT thing to do is not always the CHEAPEST or EASIEST thing to do.

She also reminded of the annual observance of America Recycles Day on Saturday, November 17. The event will run from 8:30 to 10:30am at Centenary. There will be free coffee (take along your own reusable mug) and donuts. Volunteers will be available to answer questions and help put recyclable items in the correct bins.
