Both Drivers Injured in Crash West of Shumway

Both drivers were injured in a collision Wednesday afternoon west of Shumway.

Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports the crash happened at 4:52pm on Illinois Route 33, about a half-mile east of 700th Street.

Deputies say 56-year-old Kathleen Adye of Shumway slowed to turn into a private drive. 29-year-old Steven Hartke of Beecher City failed to reduce speed and struck the Adye vehicle. Hartke's vehicle went off the highway to the left and came to rest in a bean field. Adye's car ran off the highway to the right, struck a tree, and came to rest in the front yard of a residence.

Hartke and Adye were both taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Hartke was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.
