County Jobless Rate Remains at 2.8% in May

For the second straight month, the Effingham County unemployment rate in May stood at 2.8%.

The May rate compared to 3.2% in May 2017. The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported 15 counties in the region showed unemployment rates lower than in May 2017, one increased, and two were unchanged.

There is increased demand for employees in Educational and Health Services, Financial Activities, Leisure and Hospitality, Information, and Transportation and Warehousing.

Construction and Mining showed slightly declined demand.

Government, Wholesale Trade, Manufacturing, Retail Trade and Other Service remained stable. 

Here are the numbers for area counties:

Effingham--2.8% in May, down from 3.2% in May 2017

Coles--4.0%, down from 4.1%

Cumberland--3.0%, down from 3.3%

Shelby--3.6%, down from 3.8%

Clay--3.8%, down from 4.4%

Fayette--4.1%, down from 4.7%

Jasper--3.8%, unchanged from May 2017

The state jobless rate in May was 3.5%, down from 4.4% in May 2017.
