The Effingham Public Library Board Monday decided to pursue funding for an After School Program as their annual campaign effort.

The library has conducted recent campaigns for the library home on 3rd Street downtown and, last year, raised funds to cover the cost of landscaping the building's exterior.

This year, roof work and new security gates to control the outflow of checked out items were causes discussed, along with expansion of the children's department, but the decision was to raise funds to support the after school effort.

Library Director Amanda McKay said the program has been a joint effort with the Unit 40 School District and the Effingham Park District. McKay said those entities are welcome to partner again this time, but the library wanted to make sure the program will continue.

The program will serve young people 10 and older, with a particular eye on junior high students. McKay said enrichment activities will be included in the program; study time, STEM activities and "fun stuff".

The goal is to begin the program at the start of the school year, even though the campaign letters will go out this fall.

Speaking of young people at the library, McKay reported to the Board that signups for the Summer Read Program are up 49%. The program this year is for those 18 and younger. McKay figures the fee amnesty offered those who didn't turn materials in on time has been an incentive. The adult reading program will take place this fall.

The Board discussed acquiring security cameras for the exterior of the building, but deemed them not necessary at present. Also agreed, if the City Council concurs, is to keep the position on the Library Board now held by departing City Administrator Jim Arndt open until a new administrator is selected.

Board members passed the building and maintenance levy, which is .02% of the library's EAV and is expected to generate around $50,000.
