The Effingham City Council Tuesday awarded a bid for the reconstruction of Henrietta Street from Temple Avenue to Heritage Avenue.

Effingham Asphalt was awarded the project at a cost of $482,703.70. The project will involve a new street surface, as well as concrete curb and gutter.

The work will begin this construction season.

The Council also agreed to retain Milano and Grunloh of Effingham for engineering work on concrete pavement and patching at various locations around the city. The cost of the work will not exceed $12,500.

Also approved was oil and chip work, hot and cold mix work, and gutter replacement work at various locations around town. Approval was also given to SCADA work and programming at the water treatment plant, as well as underground storage tank removal at the water treatment plant.

Council members voted to amend the purchase of property from Jamie Roberts on Forrest Street to expand Oakridge Cemetery; rezoned property on the northwest corner of Keller Drive and Outer Belt West from highway commercial district to general commercial district for use as a dental office; and approved a $25,000 contribution to Effingham City/County Committee on Aging. Similar contributions have been made by the City for more than 20 years.

The Council discussed an actuarial services contract for post-retirement health care for former City workers, and discussed authorizing a mezzanine project at the Central Fire Station by JCR Carpentry and Remodeling. Also discussed was new job descriptions for City Clerk Kelsey Lock and Assistant Police Chief Danny Lake.
