The November election in Effingham County will be one of the most contested elections in several years.

Monday was the final day for candidates of the two main political parties to file.

Especially worth watching will be the contests for County Board seats.

Local attorney Sarah Ruholl Sehy has filed as a Democrat candidate in District B, the seat now held by Board Chairman and Republican Jim Niemann. Retired optometrist Dr. Michael Sehy has filed as a Democrat candidate in District D, the seat now held by Board Vice-Chairman and Republican Dave Campbell.

On the other side of the ledger, local resident Heather Mumma has filed as a Republican candidate in District C, the seat now held by Democrat Karen Luchtefeld.

The County Board currently is made up of seven Republicans and two Democrats.

As far as countywide offices, local entertainer and entrepreneur Bill Passalacqua has formally filed as a Democrat candidate for County Treasurer. There is no incumbent in the race, since Democrat Steve Dasenbrock is not seeking re-election. Paula G. Miller won the Republican nomination for County Treasurer in the primary.

The list of candidates for county coroner could also be growing. Local residents Gerry Kingery and Ken Schwerman are reportedly circulating nominating petitions with each considering a run as an independent for the office. Republican Kim Rhodes is expected to be that party's nominee in November. At this point, there is no Democrat candidate for county coroner. The candidates of the main parties would file on August 29. Incumbent County Coroner Duane Guffey died earlier this year. Rhodes was appointed to succeed Guffey until the new coroner is elected.

If Kingery and Schwerman decide to file as independents to appear on the November ballot, they will file between June 18 and June 25.
