State Representative John Cavaletto (R-Salem) reported that the last bill he is sponsoring has passed the Illinois House. This bill updates the Volunteer Emergency Worker Job Protection Act to include those people who volunteer part-time at least 20 percent of a full-time emergency worker. The volunteer would need to be a member of a fire department, a fire protection district, municipality, or other unit of government who meets the requirements for volunteer status under the Code of Federal Regulations and Opinion Letters from the United States Department of Labor.

“I have championed many bills over the last ten years pertaining to first responders and safety and I am proud to carry this bill in the House,” said Rep. John Cavaletto, a member of the Fire & Emergency Services Committee and Co-Chair of the Fire Caucus in the General Assembly. “The people who volunteer part-time as an EMT, paramedic, and ambulance driver are putting their lives on the line full-time every time they answer the call to volunteer for our communities.”

Provides that "volunteer emergency worker" also means a person who serves on a volunteer basis and is licensed under the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Systems Act as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)(First Responder), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate (EMT-I), Advanced Emergency Medical Responder (A-EMT), or Paramedic (EMT-P), or a volunteer ambulance driver or attendant, and the person does not work in one of these capacities for another fire department, fire protection district, or governmental entity on a full-time career basis.
