Despite an overnight fire that did damage to their structure, the Effingham Assembly Church will have services on Sunday.

Church Pastor Dallas Bear released the following statement Friday afternoon: "The Effingham Assembly Church would like to express our deep appreciation to all of the firefighters and first responders who put out the fire at our building on Thursday night.

We want to tell you that we appreciate your quick thinking and how you went the extra mile to make sure that the damage was minimized.

We are thankful to be in a community with such caring and professional emergency workers. Because of your excellent efforts and the great people at Servpro and Wolfe Construction, we will be holding our Sunday services at 10am! God bless you!"

Effingham Fire Chief Joe Holomy said the fire started when a bird's nest behind a light that illuminated a cross on the front of the building was ignited. About $30,000 damage was done to the structure, and $20,000 damage to the contents, but no one was injured.
