(STEVE MAYERHOFER SIGNS HIS CONTRACT AS ALTAMONT SUPERINTENDENT)

Steve Mayerhofer has been hired as the next superintendent of the Altamont Unit 10 School District.

Mayerhofer was hired by the Altamont school board Wednesday night. He will succeed Jeff Fritchtnitch, who is leaving Altamont after 10 years to become Mt. Vernon school superintendent on July 1.

The 42-year-old Mayerhofer was one of 32 applicants and seven candidates interviewed for the job. From those seven, two finalists were selected. Mayerhofer is currently principal at Roxana Junior High School and is a 17-year education veteran.

A statement from Altamont School Board President Shelly Kuhns reads: "After second round interviews, candidate tours of our district, and board member visits to the candidates' districts, Dr. Steve Mayerhofer was determined to be the best fit for the growth of Altamont Unit 10. Staff and community surveys, as well as a meeting with the district teachers, were conducted to obtain input in the qualities most desired in the next superintendent."

Mayerhofer attended high school in Alton before obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Eastern Illinois University. He then completed a Masters of Science in Education, Specialist in Educational Leadership, and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Dr. Mayerhofer and wife April currently reside in Jerseyville.
