The Clay County Board has become the latest government body to embrace "sanctuary county" status.

The Clay board approved a symbolic resolution making Clay County a sanctuary for legal gun owners. The resolution uses language similar to that approved by the Effingham County Board, which was authored by Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler.

The measure is gaining ground in Illinois and in communities across the nation, and is making national headlines.

The action was a response to pieces of legislation in the Illinois General Assembly that some say are unconstitutional in restricting the rights of gun owners.
