Murder charges have been filed in the death of a young child in Clay County.

22-year-old Alexander J. Beal of Clay City, formerly of Charleston, was charged Friday with first degree murder and aggravated battery to a child.

The charges stem from an incident the previous weekend. On April 22 about 3:47am, the Clay County Sheriff's Office responded with Clay County Hospital Ambulance to a medical call for a two-year-old child in Clay City. At the scene, deputies began to investigate the events leading up to the medical call and requested assistance from the Child Death Investigative Task Force. As the agencies continued their investigation, they were notified on April 24 that the child had died.

Beal is yet to make his initial court appearance. No bond has been set.

The Child Death Investigative Task Force is made up of personnel from several law enforcement agencies. Agencies assisting in this investigation include Illinois State Police, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, Flora Police Department, Effingham County Sheriff's Department, Salem Police Department and Vandalia Police Department.
