The Fayette County murder trial of Alexander Beccue has been postponed until August.

The 24-year-old St. Peter resident is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the August 2017 shooting death of Joshua Smith of Ramsey. Beccue also faces counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of a weapon by a felon.

The case had been set to go to trial on June 12, but Judge Don Sheafor agreed with counsel's request for more time and re-set the trial date for August 20.

Defense attorney Ed Deters of Effingham said, "Murder cases tend to take a while. Both sides are still waiting on evidence and developing strategies."

A pre-trial hearing was set Tuesday for June 12 to monitor progress in the case.

Beccue remains in custody under $1 million bond.
