Structure Fire Near Funkhouser Sunday Afternoon

Shumway Fire Department was called to a structure fire along route 40 near Funkhouser at approximately 12:30 Sunday afternoon. 

When firefighters arrived on the scene they found a home and a shed engulfed in flames. Shumway received aid from Effigham, Beecher City, Stewardson and Watson Fire Departments at the scence. While Altamont Fire Department covered Shumway stations during the fire.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Department also responded to the scene to aid in traffic control along route 40 while the railroad was also shut down until the fire was exstinguished. 

Abbott EMS was also on scene although no injuries were reported.

It was reported that the homeowner was buring leaves and lost control of the fire as the wind picked up moving the fire towards the house and the nearby railroad tracks. 

The house was unoccupied at the time and the estimate of damage was $60,000-$80,000.
