Peggy Bueker has been hired as Altamont Community High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal. The Altamont Board took the action Monday night.

Bueker has been serving in the jobs on an interim basis since the death of Todd Arnold earlier this year.

Also Monday, Altamont Superintendent Jeff Fritchtnitch said the district has been awarded a USDA Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant, which should help expand the district's distance learning capability. Work is underway to price needed equipment. At this point, Altamont and Hutsonville are the two districts installing the equipment to launch shared courses between the two schools. Urbana and Oregon high schools will be added for the 2019-2020 school year.

USDA has opened the next grant cycle and Altamont plans to write for additional funding.

The Board was updated by high school principal Jerry Tkachuk on the curriculum and data, and voted to approve the Mystery Science curriculum for the grade school. The Administration was authorized to employ two seasonal custodial helpers and to advertise for a fulltime grounds and custodial floater.

Board members employed Tyler Niebrugge as high school Business teacher and district IT coordinator succeeding the retiring Charlie Niehaus. Also employed were Eileen Stuckemeyer as cook and Dennis Scott as crossing guard.

Enrollment continues to run behind year ago figures; 421 at the grade school as opposed to 437 last year, and 238 at the high school as opposed to 262 last year.

Grade school principal Doug Hill reported teacher class assignments and a master schedule for next year are complete, while they are reviewing applications for first grade and junior high English teaching positions.

End of year dates at Altamont were reviewed, including 8th grade promotion and the grade school honor student assembly at 2pm on May 16, high school Baccalaureate at 7pm on May 13, and high school commencement at 7pm on May 19.
