HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital announced today it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. The advanced certification is for Joint Commission-accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers seeking to elevate the quality, consistency and safety of their services and patient care. HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital is only one of 71 hospitals in the nation to have achieved this advanced orthopedic certification.

St. Anthony’s underwent a rigorous onsite review on January 22-24. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with advanced disease-specific care standards and total hip and total knee replacement requirements, including orthopedic consultation, and pre-operative, intraoperative and post-surgical orthopedic surgeon follow-up care, with an emphasis on care across the continuum and patient involvement in decision-making.

St. Anthony’s also received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Orthopedic Certification for Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery. Advanced certification is not yet available for total shoulder replacements so St. Anthony’s pursued and achieved basic recertification for that service.

“Achieving Advanced Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement Certification recognizes HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital’s commitment to provide care in a safe and efficient manner for patients,” said Patrick Phelan, executive director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission. “The advanced certification will help St. Anthony’s better provide coordinated and comprehensive care to patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement.”

“St. Anthony’s is pleased to receive advanced certification from The Joint Commission, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” added Angela Kelly, Director of Surgical Services and Cardiology, shared. “Our Orthopedic Center of Excellence team, a collaborative effort between our exceptional colleagues and the excellent orthopedic specialists of Bonutti Clinic, did an amazing job preparing for this survey.  This is just another step on our continuous improvement journey.  We have raised the bar in orthopedics by seeking this advanced certification on behalf of our patients to continue providing quality care close to home.”

Peter M. Bonutti, MD, FACS, shared, “The Bonutti Orthopedic Group has performed thousands of hip and knee arthroplasties the last 29 years with a goal of providing the highest quality care for our patients.  This collaboration with St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital which includes dedication to patient care, investment in technology and infrastructure as well as overall integration of patient care has resulted in this recognition,” Dr. Bonutti said. “Our goal is to continue to improve the patient experience including now outpatient hip and knee arthroplasty, robotic surgery, and revision joint replacement.”

Established in 2016 and awarded for a two-year period, the advanced certification was developed in response to the growing number of patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement surgery, as well as the increased focus on clinical evidence-based patient care as it relates to pain management, quality of life issues, functional limitation in mobility and the return to normal daily activities.
