A Leesburg, Virginia man has been charged in Effingham County with cannabis trafficking.

23-year-old Matthew Taffer was stopped by State Police here Tuesday for a traffic offense while traveling from Colorado to Virginia. A K9 hit on Taffer's vehicle and a search turned up 72 pounds of cannabis.

Cannabis trafficking is a Class X felony, meaning mandatory prison time if convicted.

Taffer was also charged with a Class X felony count of manufacture or delivery of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis and a Class 1 felony count, punishable by 4 to 15 years in prison, of possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis.

Taffer could receive up to 30 years in prison on the Class X felony counts.

Taffer has posted $4,000 cash bond. He is due back in court on March 22.
