Authorities have released information on alleged threats at schools in Cowden and Vandalia this week.

A letter is going out to parents of Cowden-Herrick School District students today and being posted on the district's website and Facebook page regarding a "possible threat" to students in the Cowden building.

The letter from Cowden-Herrick Superintendent Darrell Gordon reads, "Earlier this week, the District became aware of a situation rumored in the community and on social media posing a possible threat to our students in the Cowden building. The local law enforcement was contacted and an investigation was conducted resulting in absolutely no potential threat to any student or staff member."

Gordon's letter goes on to read, "As a grandparent of an elementary student in Herrick and a preschooler in Cowden, I understand our sense of need to protect our children. Please be assured we take all threats seriously and will continue to monitor the slightest of allegations and/or rumors in order to provide a safe environment."

Meanwhile, the Vandalia Police Department released a statement regarding a possible threat at Vandalia High School earlier this week. The statement reads, "On the morning of February 14, the Vandalia Police Department was notified of a possible threat at Vandalia High School. Chief Jeff Ray says it was reported to police that a student had made comments about having a plan to do a shooting in the school. Chief Ray says that officers interviewed multiple witnesses and spoke to the juvenile that allegedly made the statement. Chief said the juvenile suspect claimed to be joking around when he made the statement. The juvenile was placed under arrest and the investigation is ongoing."

Chief Ray adds they take statements of this type very seriously. Chief Ray added they are unaware of any other threat or incidents other than this one that took place on Wednesday.
