The Effingham Park Board Wednesday agreed to issue up to $550,000 in bonds to finance capital improvement projects this season.

Park District Director Jeff Althoff at the top of the project list is fencing at ball diamonds, as well as surface work in parking lots. Some pump and piping replacement work is expected at Kluthe Memorial Pool.

Althoff said if any funds remain, they could be used to address any overages at Harmony Playground, the accessible-to-all playground to be built at Evergreen Hollow Park.

The bonds are issued to generate funds so projects can be undertaken, and they are paid off when property tax revenue is received later in the year.

Park commissioners voted to annex the Hoffman property on West Fayette into the district, and heard from auditor Mark Kenter that the district fund balance, according to Althoff, is "almost right where we were last year". The District balance is $490,000 in the black.

Althoff reviewed project highlights in the Park District in the past year, and Jake Junghanel reported on activities at the Workman Sports and Wellness Complex, including a Triathlon scheduled on February 25 and a Health Fair coming up in April.
