Jasper County has operated a highly-successful solid waste collection program for many years.

The only time a problem arises is when people misuse the system. Sometimes, people dispose of the wrong things in the wrong way. Another concern is when people from outside the county try to dispose of their waste in the dumpsters placed in rural areas throughout the county.

Misuse of the system is happening again. Board members Thursday cautioned that continued misuse could lead to pulling the dumpsters and the end of the program.

The Board recognized two county dispatchers for their role in handling a hazardous materials spill on the south end of Newton in late October. The dispatchers helped share information between participating emergency services agencies during the incident.

The Board discussed a hotel/motel tax, and heard from Bob Wagner who asked for $9,000 in funding for North Muddy Township. They also discussed using gaming money to cover lost dollars from the State. Board members also heard from Steve Rubsam who gave an update on a River Walk project and asked the Board for $5,000 toward the cost of the Walk.

Board members learned that the Emergency Management Agency has received $14,200 in funds from the Mary Heath Grant to purchase a drone. The Board also passed the tax levy for the coming fiscal year on a 10-2 vote.

Members also approved a new contract with Public Defender Bill Hoffeditz, and appointed Larry Brooks to a three-year term on the county 911 board.
