EIU Fall Commencement is This Saturday

Eastern Illinois University will host its fall 2017 commencement celebration in two ceremonies in Lantz Arena on Saturday, December 16.

Ceremonies will take place at 10 a.m. for students graduating from the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences and the College of Arts and Humanities, and at 1 p.m. for students graduating from the College of Education and Professional Studies, the College of Sciences and the School of Continuing Education. Students enrolled in the Graduate School will march with their respective colleges.

EIU president Dr. David M. Glassman will preside, with music provided by the EIU Wind Symphony.

EIU alumnus Matthew L. Kircher, M.D. will deliver the charge to the class for both ceremonies. Dr. Kircher is currently an assistant professor of Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. An ear disorder specialist, Kircher completed his undergraduate studies in biology at Eastern Illinois University in 2000. Two years later, he earned a master’s degree working under the mentorship of Dr. Britto Nathan, assistant chair and professor and coordinator of graduate programs for EIU’s Department of Biology. He went on to complete medical school at Rush Medical College in 2006. He then fulfilled his Otolaryngology (or ENT) residency training at Loyola University Medical Center in 2011, which was followed by a fellowship in Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery at the Michigan Ear Institute in 2013. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, currently serves on several national ENT committees, and is an active member of the American Neurotology Society and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Student speakers will be Fabian Rempfer, an M.A. candidate from Heigenbrücken, Germany, who will represent the Graduate School during the 10 a.m. ceremony, and Robbie Nethery of Oblong, IL, who will represent the School of Continuing Education at the 1 p.m. ceremony.

Joe Dively of Charleston and Daniel P. Caulkins of Decatur will represent the Eastern Illinois University Board of Trustees at the 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ceremonies, respectively.
