Effingham County Sheriff David Mahon told the County 911 Board Tuesday that the Altamont Police Department obtained a grant for radio units.

In November, Altamont Police Chief Alan Heiens told the Board that he had applied for a grant that would pay for radios for his officers. Heiens, though, asked the 911 Board to cover the user fees for the radios if the grant was obtained.

The Sheriff said the Altamont department got a grant to cover the cost of five radios, and the 911 Board voted to cover the user fees, as they had for other police agencies in the county.

The Board also learned that the cost of maintaining the dispatching consoles for 911 is within budget. System Administrator Jodi Moomaw double-checked after it was indicated last month that the vendor was charging far more than had been needed to handle console maintenance in the past. Moomaw obtained an itemized list of maintenance costs, eliminated some of the items that hadn't been on the list in the past, and the work moved back under budget.
